Rainbow Cloud Place Settings for St. Patrick’s Day

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

Are you Irish? Although I don’t have any Irish in my blood, I just LOVE St. Patrick’s Day! I guess I’m just obsessed with lucky charms, rainbows, and pinching people who don’t wear green! I also love anything “cloud”, so this year I decided to make some no-sew cloud utensil pockets with pom-pom rainbows for our St. Patrick’s celebration. It has been an extra cloudy winter here, so I figured I would embrace the weather and find a way to celebrate!

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

These could also be used for any party involving rainbows…Rainbow Brite, My Little Pony, just plain rainbows, etc.  They are such a cute addition to your table setting, and every March 17th, you can bring them out again!

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

Although I used them as utensil pockets, they could also hold favors, gold chocolate coins, or even leprechaun bait!

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

What You Need

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets
  • White felt (8.5×11”)
  • Cardstock (8.5×11”)
  • Assorted pom-poms (9 per cloud)
  • Small beads (3 per cloud)
  • Fishing line
  • False eye lashes (1 set per cloud)
  • Blush
  • All-purpose tacky glue
  • Scissors
  • Permanent marker
  • Sewing needle

How-To

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

Step 1
Fold a piece of 8.5×11” cardstock in half, and draw a cloud shape, or find a cloud online and print off a template.

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

Step 2
Fold your 8.5×11” piece of felt in half, and trace your cloud template on one side, using a permanent marker.  With the piece of felt still folded in half, cut right inside the lines to cut out your cloud.  Now you should have two felt clouds.

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

Step 3
Using a needle and fishing line, thread 3 pom-poms in different sizes and colors onto the line.  Spread them out with a couple of inches in between each pom-pom.

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

Step 4
Tie one end of the fishing line around the bottom pom-pom.  Cut the fishing line off the spool about 2-3 inches above the top pom-pom.  Thread a bead on the top end of fishing line, and make several knots around the bead, leaving a couple inches between the bead and pom-pom.

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

Step 5
Repeat step 4 two more times, so that you have 3 strands of pom-poms, with a single bead at the top of each strand.

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

Step 6
Squeeze a line of glue onto one felt cloud about ½” from the edges, but leave a good portion of the top of the cloud un-glued.

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

Step 7
Lay the beads from your pom-pom strands over the glue at the bottom of the cloud, and place your second felt cloud directly over the first cloud.  Push the clouds together all the way around the glued edges, and squeeze them together until they begin to dry.

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

Step 8
Place a pair of false eyelashes on top of the cloud, and move them around until you are satisfied with their placement.  The kind I used were sticky enough to stay on their own, but you may need to add a tiny strip of glue to the lashes.

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

Step 9
Use a blush brush to apply a small circle of blush to the “cheeks” of your cloud.

DIY St. Patrick's Day No-Sew Cloud Utensil Pockets

Once your cloud is dry, you may add utensils, napkins, straws, or even favors!

Happy crafting!

DIY Recycled Boats

DIY Recycled Boats

One of our mottos here is to reduce, reuse, and recycle! Some of our all-time favorite craft projects are born from recycling or repurposing materials and we do it as often as we can! We hold onto neat looking bottles and cool colored containers for as long as possible, and then turn it all into a super fun craft! Some crafty messes do need a trash bag though, and we can always count on Glad. Crafting and DIY messes are no match for Glad’s new Kitchen Pro trash bags – they come with double the protection making it Glad’s biggest, strongest kitchen trash bag yet!

DIY Recycled Boats

This time, we spent an afternoon dreaming up these DIY boats. Most of our recyclables are clear or neutral in color, so we decorated them with blue and green tape for a playful, nautical vibe. We made a few different styles of boats using the materials we had on hand, but the possibilities are really endless! Keep on reading for a free printable template to make your own custom paper boats. When we were done crafting for the day, we put all our supplies away, toss the recyclables in the bin, and anything we can’t possibly repurpose anymore goes into the trash. Glad Kitchen Pro offers 53% more bag, for 53% more fun – so go ahead, enjoy more fun-filled crafty afternoons!

DIY Recycled Boats

What You Need

DIY Recycled Boats
  • Free printable boat template (download here)
  • Thin cardboard
  • Colored paper
  • Duct and/or electrical tape
  • Wooden skewers
  • Colored straws
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Empty bottles and containers
  • Paint (for a nautical backdrop!)
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil
  • Hot glue gun

How-To

DIY Recycled Boats

Step 1
Print out the boat template and cut out. Trace onto a piece of thin cardboard, like an empty cereal box.

DIY Recycled Boats

Step 2
Cut out the cardboard boat and fold along the dotted lines.

DIY Recycled Boats

Step 3
Use hot glue to secure the tabs together to form a triangle-shaped boat. Now the fun part – start covering your boat with duct tape! This will help keep your boat dry in water.

DIY Recycled Boats

Step 4
Continue covering your boat with duct tape. Electrical tape is a great option too – we used it here to make these stripes inside the boat.

DIY Recycled Boats

Step 5
To make the sail, cut a paper triangle and hot glue one edge to a wooden skewer. You can play around with the size of your sail, but this one was 3 1/4” across the bottom and 4 1/2” tall. Use paint or tape to decorate your sails if you like!

DIY Recycled Boats

Step 6
Use a dab of hot glue to temporarily attach the wooden skewer into the center of the boat, holding it in place until dry. To make it more secure, cut a piece of electrical tape about 1” long and snip one edge into mini fringe. Wrap the tape around the skewer, pressing the fringed tape onto the boat to secure. Your paper boat is now complete!

DIY Recycled Boats

Step 7
For a pontoon-style boat, cut a piece of cardboard into a rectangle to be the top-raft portion of the boat. Cover the cardboard in tape.

DIY Recycled Boats

Step 8
Use more tape to attach two water bottles together, and then tape or hot glue the raft on top. Make and attach a sail the same way as before.

DIY Recycled Boats

Step 9
For an even simpler boat, use an empty shampoo or conditioner bottle as the base, decorate with tape, and attach the sail on top.

Oatmeal Cream Pies

Oatmeal Cream Pies Recipe Oatmeal cream pies were a favorite treat as a child, usually reserved for something special, like long car rides or birthday parties. It’s been a long time since I’ve eaten one from the grocery store, but I decided it would be appropriate to introduce my own children to their magic. I opted for a swiss meringue buttercream for the filling instead of the usual marshmallow fluff-based inside and ended up liked this grown-up version much better. Letting the filled cookies sit for a few hours before snacking is my favorite way to enjoy.

Ingredients

Oatmeal Cookies
Oatmeal Cream Pies Recipe
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • ¾ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups rolled oats

Directions

Oatmeal Cookies
  • Adjust an oven rack to the middle position and heat the oven to 350° F. Line three baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter on medium speed until smooth. Add both sugars and beat on medium until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the egg, molasses, and vanilla and mix on medium until combined. Add the flour mixture and mix on low until just combined. Add the oats and mix on low until combined. Using a spatula, stir the batter to incorporate any stray oats on the bottom of the mixing bowl.
  • Form the dough into small balls (about a heaping tablespoon each) and place 12 on each baking sheet. Bake one sheet at a time for 10 to 12 minutes, until the sides are golden brown and the tops are just starting to brown but are still slightly pale.
  • Transfer the baking sheet to a wire rack and let cool 5 minutes. Remove the cookies from the pan and let cool completely on a wire rack.

Ingredients

Cream Filling
Oatmeal Cream Pies Recipe
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 24 tablespoons (3 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

Directions

Cream Filling
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the egg whites, sugar, and salt. Put the bowl over a double boiler (set the mixing bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, making sure the bottom of the mixing bowl doesn’t touch the surface of the water).
  • Stir the mixture with a rubber spatula until the sugar is completely melted, about 4-5 minutes. While you are stirring, make sure to brush down the sides of the bowl with the spatula –this will ensure that no sugar grains are lurking on the sides, and also will help prevent the egg whites from cooking. Remove the bowl from the heat, and using a whisk attachment, whisk the egg-sugar mixture on medium-high speed until stiff, glossy peaks form, about 8-10 minutes. The bowl should feel just about room temperature. Reduce the speed to medium again, and add the butter, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating well after each addition. When the butter has been completely incorporated, add the vanilla and heavy cream. Beat again until combined. Use immediately.

Fill a pastry bag with the frosting, and then pipe the frosting on the bottom side of one cookie, and top with another. For a softer cookie, let the filled cookies sit for a few hours before enjoying.
