The Cutest Coloring & Activity Book

Today we’re super excited to be sharing a little sneak peak into Masha’s World, the newest (and cutest!) activity book from our friend Suzy Ultman! You’re likely familiar with some of her previous work like the Masha and Her Sisters board book and the adorable Masha and Friends stationery set. This new activity book, in case you haven’t guessed, is all about everyone’s favorite Matryoshka doll Masha!

“MashaPancake”, pictured above, was one of the first ideas that sparked this activity book! Suzy was making pancakes one morning and used Oyla (the chef Matryoshka) as inspiration. Isn’t it the sweetest pancake art you’ve ever seen? She sent a photo to her publisher and conversations about a whole book of Masha activities began! Each doll in Masha and Her Sisters is featured in this new activity book too!

If you don’t already, make sure to follow Suzy on Instagram! She shares the most beautifully playful paper pop-ups on her feed, and these inspired many of the activities in Masha’s World. Pop-up paper dolls, a folding playset, and punch-out mask collection are all included in the activity book!

There are also mix-and-match coloring pages, instructional drawing activities, stencils, and 8 full pages of stickers to get you and your little ones’ creative juices flowing. We are so in love with all of Suzy’s illustrations and have loved exploring Masha’s World. We know that you will too, so be sure to get your copy of Masha’s World right here or at your local bookshop.

And don’t forget to find Suzy on Instagram and follow along on all her creative adventures!

Paper Plate Papel Picado

Have you ever made your own papel picado before? Some of the traditional designs can definitely be super detailed and intricate, so we wanted to try a version that was quick, simply, and kid-friendly. Enter our friend the paper plate! We loved using paper plates as the starting point because they’re affordable, we always have them around, and other than cutting them in half, they’re ready to use!

Since we used the super-thin paper plates you get at the dollar store, we used watercolor paints to add some color before we did any cutting. Paper punches are your friend here too, especially when crafting with little ones. We also used a craft knife to make some of the shapes on the inside of the plate where the cutters didn’t quite reach. Scroll down to see the full instructions!

what you need:

how-to:

Step 1
Cut the paper plates in half. Mix a blob of paint in a cup with some water and apply onto the paper plates – we used five shades. Let the plates dry completely.

Step 2
Once dry, use the paper punches, scissors, and craft knife to cut out designs onto the paper plates.

Step 3
Repeat on all the paper plates. Apply a line of white glue along the top edge of the back of each paper plate and then attach a piece of string. Let dry and then hang as a garland!

Happy crafting!

Crazy Colorful Recycled Plastic Art

We are so over the moon to have recently learned all about the amazing work from artist Alex Lockwood. One of our ultimate inspirations is recycled art and using everyday objects in unexpected ways, so Alex’s masks and sculptures using bottle caps and recycled plastic have got us amazed.

Born in Seattle but now living in Nashville, Alex collected bottle caps, lids, and other recycled plastic from plastic redemption machines that don’t accept bottles with lids on them. He turned his massive collection into masks (pictured above White Mask, 2015) and what he calls “Shakers, Throwers, and Crashers”. Pictured below, these chandelier-like pieces are strung together onto wire and rope and can then be shaken or even thrown. The bottle caps make a sort of colorful tornado, and we’re betting a pretty loud one too!

We are so incredibly inspired by the way Alex has strung the bottle lids together and turned them into these colorful masks! His thoughtfulness and attention to detail make it nearly impossible to look away.

Pictured above is Red Mask, 2015 and below White Mask, Yellow Hair, 2015.

We also love these public art pieces that are on display at a mini putt course. Who else would be so distracted by these cool sculptures to actually focus on making par?

We will definitely be making sure to save all the cool-shaped plastic containers to get creative with ourselves! Even though our collection of bottle caps will never come close in size to that of Alex Lockwood, we’re sure feeling inspired to reuse and recycle.

Follow Alex on Instagram to see even more of his recycled creations!
