End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

What’s at the end of the rainbow? It’s a potted plant! That might not be as exciting as a pot of gold, but these felt rainbow plant picks make any bit of green a little magical.

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

When you choose your colors for these rainbows, remember that you don’t always have to use traditional colors. Pastels are fun and bright, and you can even make some of these without a full rainbow! In fact, picking out the colors for your plant picks is half the fun.

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

Ready to make your own rainbows?

what you need:

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks
  • Felt in a Rainbow of Colors
  • Black Embroidery Floss
  • Wooden Skewers
  • Freezer Paper
  • Pencil
  • Iron
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Craft Glue
  • Printable template

how-to:

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

Step 1
Print the Rainbow Plant Pick PDF on regular paper. Trace the template outlines onto the non-shiny side of the freezer paper. Trace the faces onto the cloud and rainbow shapes.

Group the templates by the color of felt you want to cut them out of. This makes it easier to cut the pieces and use less felt. It may be helpful to plan your colors on the printed page (especially for keeping them in rainbow order). Then transfer that to the tracing.

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

Step 2
Iron the freezer paper to the felt pieces. The shiny side of the freezer paper holds to the felt so you can cut the pieces with accuracy.

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

Step 3
To make the faces, thread the needle with three strands of black embroidery floss. Tie a knot in the other end of the thread. With the paper still attached, stitch the face through the felt and paper. Use french knots for eyes and a scallop stitch for the mouth.

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

Peel the paper off all the felt pieces. But when you remove it from the embroidery, tear around the stitches so you don’t tug at them.

If embroidery isn’t your thing, you can use black acrylic paint and a tiny brush to paint these faces on instead.

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

Step 4
Apply glue the white backing pieces and then attach the rainbow pieces.

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

For the regular rainbow, work from the largest “bow” to the smallest. For the cloud and rainbow, attach the cloud first, then add the remaining pieces from top to bottom.

When gluing the heart, the rainbow shapes don’t go all the way to the edges. It helps to apply the glue to the rainbow pieces, starting with the center and working out.

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

Step 5
Flip the felt rainbow over and lay the top of a wooden skewer on the middle. Apply ample glue to one of the felt circles.

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

Place the circle over the skewer. Press it so that the circle wraps around the skewer, keeping the front of the rainbow flat.

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

When the plant picks dry, they should feel a little stiff. And that means they’re ready to decorate a potted plant!

Add them to some lucky shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day, your favorite summer container garden, or even a vase full of cut flowers.

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

Once they’ve been in a plant, you probably want to keep them only for plants. But you could certainly make these picks to decorate the top of a cake too. Because it’s fun to add rainbows to everything!

End of the Rainbow Plant Picks

Happy crafting!

Cardboard Stacking Clouds

This post is a paid partnership with Paramount Pictures and their new film Wonder Park coming to theaters March 15.

Cardboard Stacking Clouds

Ever wonder what you can do with a box? The sky’s the limit with these cardboard cut-out cloud stackers! With just a little imagination, create something wonderful in celebration of Wonder Park coming to theaters March 15! We have a serious love for repurposing regular, everyday items into something completely new, and is there anything more different than a plain cardboard box and fluffy clouds? With just a little bit of paint, transform your recyclables into these super fun cloud stackers. Kids will love getting creative and painting a cotton candy texture onto them.

Cardboard Stacking Clouds

Wonder Park tells the story of a young girl named June who imagines and builds an out-of-this-world amusement park that magically comes to life.  Watch the trailer below!

These cardboard stackers are the ultimate way for a child to expand their imagination. They can be arranged and rearranged into towers and shapes of all different sizes. And when you’re done playing, these clouds take up almost no space at all. It’s truly amazing what you can create using your imagination. So save a few boxes and share your family’s creations using #WonderBox and #WonderPark – we can’t wait to see what you dream up. Families can also upload their #WonderBox creation for a chance to be 1 of 5 lucky winners of a $1,000 Amazon Gift Card! Visit the film’s website for more information and keep reading to see all our tips and tricks for making these cloud stackers!

Cardboard Stacking Clouds

what you need:

Cardboard Stacking Clouds
  • Empty cardboard box
  • Paint (white, blue, grey, glitter, etc)
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil
  • Craft knife
  • Cutting mat
  • Markers or crayons (optional)

how-to:

Cardboard Stacking Clouds

Step 1
Flatten your empty cardboard box and use a pencil to draw cloud shapes on it. Your clouds can vary in size (our largest one was about 18” across while the smallest was about 10”) and shape. One thing to keep in mind is to draw some clouds with flat bottoms so that they can sit on the floor nicely and form a stable base for your cloud tower.

Cardboard Stacking Clouds

Step 2
Cut out the clouds using your craft knife and cutting mat.

Cardboard Stacking Clouds

Step 3
Time to get painting! Put some white, pale blue, and pale grey paint onto a paper plate or palette and have your kids paint all over the clouds. Mixing and blending the colors together really makes for a fluffy cloud look! You can also give your kids glitter paint to add a little extra sparkle. Let the first side dry and then flip to paint the backs as well.

Cardboard Stacking Clouds

If your kids are a little young for painting or you want a less-messy crafting option, you can choose to give the cloud a quick coat of white paint yourself, let dry, and then have your little ones add some texture with blue or grey markers.

Cardboard Stacking Clouds

Step 4
Once all the painted clouds have dried completely, use the craft knife and cutting mat to make little slots into each of the clouds. There isn’t an exact science to this, you can cut slots into the clouds wherever you like – some on the bottom, some on the tops, etc. Make sure to keep the slots fairly narrow (not wider than the thickness of your cardboard) so that they can stack together nicely. If the slots are too wide, keeping the cloud stackers together later will be challenging and form wobbly towers.

Cardboard Stacking Clouds Cardboard Stacking Clouds

You can make other shapes to add into your clouds too – cut an arch to make a rainbow, or trace a dinner plate to make a bright yellow sun.

Cardboard Stacking Clouds

The mini rockets were made out of paper towel rolls with painted cardboard triangles glued to the base. Paint a paper plate and roll into a cone to form the point, using glue to attach to the top of the rocket.

Cardboard Stacking Clouds Wonder Park

Learn a little bit more about the film and make plans with your family to see it in theaters March 15!

Wonder Park tells the story of a magnificent amusement park where the imagination of a wildly creative girl named June comes alive. One magical day, June is running through the woods to find her way home where she discovers an old rollercoaster car and climbs inside. She suddenly finds herself in Wonder Park, an amusement park she had created in her mind and put aside. All of her rides and characters are brought to life but are falling into disarray without her. Now, with the help of her fun and lovable park characters, June will have to put the wonder back in Wonder Park before it is lost forever.
