They feature these two styles of large vases, amongst other things, which I thought I’d have a go at decorating with some trendy techniques! I’m loving copper at the moment, so that had to feature, and I really liked the quirkiness of the other design in an on-trend shade of blue.
2 Ways to Decorate Ceramic Vases
Copper Vase
Skill Level: Beginner
Time to Make: 20 minutes
You Will Need
- Large rectangular ceramic vase blank »
- Copper spray paint – available in store
- Mod podge »
Craft Essentials
- Wide masking tape »
- Newspaper (optional)
How to Make
1. Decide on your design. I wanted to go very simple, and liked the copper dipped effect, so chose to have only some of the vase sprayed copper.
2. Mask off the areas you don’t want covered in spray paint with the masking tape. If you’re doing a straight line all the way round, make sure it matches up as you go or it won’t meet right at the end!
Top Tip! . . .
If you want the bottom of your vase completely white, make sure to tape off the whole section. I didn't and ended up with some slight spray below to create a faint stripe, which I actually quite liked!3. Find a well ventilated area, preferably outside, and lay down your newspaper to protect the floor. Shake your can of spray paint and then proceed to spray onto your vase, at a distance of about 15-20 cm.
Top Tip! . . .
Don't spray too much at once, or the paint will start to drip. Short bursts are better, building up layers of paint as you need to.4. Leave to dry for a few hours.
5. Remove the masking tape, and seal with a layer of mod podge. Leave to dry.
Blue Painted Vase
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Time to Make: One hour
You Will Need
- Large cylindrical ceramic vase blank »
- Pastel blue spray paint – available in store
- Crafter’s acrylic in Flesh »
- Mod podge »
Craft Essentials
- Wide masking tape »
- Newspaper (optional)
- Small paintbrush »
- Pencil
- Rubber
How to Make
1. Mask off the areas you don’t want covered in spray paint with the masking tape – I chose to cut mine off about three quarters of the way up. If you’re doing a straight line all the way round, make sure it matches up as you go or it won’t meet right at the end!
2. Find a well ventilated area, preferably outside, and lay down your newspaper to protect the floor. Shake your can of spray paint and then proceed to spray onto your vase, at a distance of about 15-20 cm. Leave to dry for a few hours.
3. Remove the masking tape. Using a pencil, draw on the small arrow shapes lightly, making rows all the way round. Don’t worry if you make a mistake, you can simply rub it out with a rubber!
4. Make sure all your pencil lines are as light as can be – use a rubber to lighten if necessary. Using the acrylic, paint over the faint lines you’ve drawn in the peach acrylic, starting from the top and working down. Leave to dry.
5. Seal with a coat of mod podge.
