Friendship bracelets may signify, well, friendship, but we think we can one up that. Turn a friendship bracelet into a pie and you have a double dose of friendly love! We knotted colored strips of pie dough into a beautiful blue bracelet crust, but you can choose any combination of colors in your pie!
The key to perfectly knotted pie dough? Go slow, pull gently, and keep the strips of dough that you aren’t using moist(keep them covered and mist with water occasionally) so that they won’t dry out and break when you use them.
What You Need
Makes about 4 mini pies
- 4 small Pie Tins lined with Pie Dough (recipe below, or use refrigerated dough)
- Small Ball of Light Blue Pie Dough
- Small Ball of Turquoise Pie Dough
- Small Ball of Royal Blue Pie Dough
- Small Ball of Dark Blue Pie Dough
- Roller cutter or sharp knife
- 1 egg, beaten
- Pastry Brush
- Parchment Paper
*Make sure your pie tins have a wide enough lip that the friendship bracelet edge can rest on it without hanging over the edge – muffin tins work great as mini pie tins!
How-To
Step 1
Place each ball of dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll in a long strip to a thickness of 1/8”.
Step 2
Cut each strip into strings that are about 18” long and 1/8” wide.
Step 3
Place one string of each color of dough on your work surface, pinching the tops of each string together with the ends laid out to form a sort of teepee.
Step 4
Starting with the string on the far left side, lift it over the string next to it and tuck the end underneath the string, pulling it gently upwards.
Step 5
Wrap the same color string around the next string in the same fashion, gently pulling it upward to form a knot.
Step 6
Wrap the same color around the third string, gently pull it into a knot, then lay the string down on the far right side.
Step 7
Repeat this process with each color until you reach the ends of the string and have formed a small section of friendship bracelet. Repeat this with the remaining dough strings until you three different sections of bracelet.
Step 8
Brush the rim of a dough-lined pie tin with the beaten egg. Fill with pie filling, if using.
Step 9
Gently pick up one section of friendship bracelet and place it around the rim of the pie crust, carefully pressing down to seal it. Place the remaining two sections of bracelet around the rim of the crust to form one long ring of friendship bracelet.
Step 10
Brush the edge of the crust with beaten egg.
Step 11
Bake at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes, or until crust is lightly golden brown.
