First Trimester – Tired…SO tired!

Great, amazing, I’ve just found out i’m pregnant thanks to the two obvious pink lines on the pregnancy stick that i’ve just spent the last couple of minutes waving in the air. For the first couples of days everything felt like it was floating on air because well, WE’RE HAVING A BABY!

The initial excitement soon gave way to extreme exhaustion as classic first trimester symptoms took hold with a vengeance. When it comes to growing a baby, the main important development stuff begins in the first trimester and that’s why most of us feel pretty crappy in those first 12 weeks or so.

If you are like me, been married for a couple of years, you will understand the pressures of feeling like you’re under the “baby watch” radar, so hiding a pregnancy at the start can be pretty challenging – especially when it’s the time you’re feeling your worst!

At social gatherings, my friends, especially those who are already mums, gave me the odd suspicious look but, knowing how precarious those first 12 weeks can be, were too polite to ask. It’s very difficult not to have your cover blown in the early stages, especially when such major changes are happening inside your body. On the outside you have to keep up a pretence that everything’s the same. It’s not easy. Never again will you lie as blatantly to those closest to you.

One of my hardest challenges was being a Bridesmaid at my friend’s wedding at just 6 weeks pregnant. Sat at the big roundtable with friends mixed with some strangers, I had to pull out the antibiotic excuse for a tooth infection to validate the reason why I was skipping the champagne toast during the speeches. Some people round the table would nod sympathetically, whilst others would dive in, head first and ask me straight out. Those people should be avoided at all costs!

For me, the first trimester has been a whirlwind of emotions ranging from one end of the scale to the other. I was emotional, unpredictable and often full of uncertainty, just all in all quite difficult to live with sometimes. But one thing is for sure I am SO grateful and could not be happier to be carrying a little miracle.

How was your first trimester journey? I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
