If you haven’t tried painting with a salad spinner before, you are in for a real treat! The technique really is as simple as it sounds – just put a piece of paper inside a salad spinner, apply a few drops and squiggles of paint, and get spinning! The results are different every time and it can definitely be a little bit addicting! For today’s project, instead of putting paper in our salad spinner we used clear plastic party plates! And even better, if you apply the paint to the bottoms of the plats, you can still use them as snack plates for your next party!
Before beginning, we selected a few of our favorite shades of Delta Ceramcoat® Acrylic Paint to make a custom color scheme to mix & match on the whole set of party plates. When you’re out picking up the mini plates, you can find all 22 shades of Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint and the 6 brand new Flash Metallic shades in the craft aisle at Target. The paints’ rich, matte formula is perfect for this project – all you need is one coat in the salad spinner and your plates will be bright and colorful! Keep reading to see the full instructions on how to make your own set of party plates!
what you need:
- Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint
- Salad spinner
- Small clear plastic plates
- Tape
- Mod Podge
- Paintbrush (optional)
how-to:
Step 1
Use a roll of tape to attach the clear plastic plate into the salad spinner – make sure to tape it in so that the bottom of the plate is facing up. Squeeze drops, lines, swirls, and blobs of paint onto the plate. Experiment with different techniques!
Step 2
Close the lid of the salad spinner and spin away! When you remove the lid, the paint will have spread out over the plate. If you’re happy with the way it looks at this point , carefully remove the plate from the salad spinner and set aside to dry. You can also choose to add more paint after the first spin if you want to add more details and layers.
Step 3
Once you’re happy with the plates’ designs, let dry completely. We let ours dry overnight since the paint was quite layered in some spots.
Step 4
Once dry, give the back a coat of Mod Podge for extra protection especially if you plan on using and reusing these plates multiple times. Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe clean the top unpainted side as needed after using.
We’re betting you won’t be able to stop spinning plates for quite a while! It can be so much fun to play around with different colors and techniques. You’ll want to grab more plates than you think you’ll need because trust us when we say you’ll be glad you have more to experiment on!
Find Delta Ceramcoat® Acrylic Paint at Target in 22 colors and six new Flash Metallic colors at Target in the craft aisle or at Target.com. Wouldn’t these party plates be even more fun with a touch of metallic?
