Along with Back-to-School, we are back to football season, cheerleading, and a whole lot of team spirit! A couple years ago, I made some DIY Mini Megaphones out of wooden doll bodies, and although they made for some really cute place cards, I always wondered how I could turn them into cake toppers. It made my day when I ran across some Styrofoam cones at the craft store, since it’s the perfect material for the job!
These are so simple to whip up, and kids will love them for a Back-to-School bash, pre-game party, cheerleading function, or any event requiring some school spirit. Bring them along the next time you tailgate with friends. These would also be cute to design and use for football viewing parties, like the Super Bowl!
what you need:
• Styrofoam cones (2.7 in x 1.8 in)
• FolkArt acrylic paint in multiple colors
• FolkArt Glitterific acrylic paint (clear hologram)
• Sponge brush
• 16 gauge aluminum wire
• Wire cutters
• Tacky glue
• All-purpose glue
• Small cardstock or sticker letters
• Bamboo skewers
how-to:
Step 1
Using a sponge brush, paint your Styrofoam cones in multiple colors of acrylic paint. You will most likely need several coats for the best coverage. Allow to dry.
Step 2
Use another sponge brush to paint a coat of FolkArt Glitterific acrylic paint over each Styrofoam cone, and allow to dry.
Step 3
Use a cutting machine to cut small letters into cardstock using a “varsity” font, to spell the team name(s) of your choice, or use small letter stickers. Spell out the team name horizontally and centered on the cone, starting at the narrow end. Once you are satisfied with the placement, stick the letters on, or use glue if they are made of cardstock. Allow to dry.
Step 4
Hold the cone horizontally, with the team name centered from top to bottom, and place the pointy end of your bamboo skewer into the bottom, right side of the megaphone until it is inserted far enough to stay in place.
Step 5
Use wire cutters to cut a 1.5” piece of 16 gauge aluminum wire. Use your fingers to mold the strip into an arc, then bend about 1/8” out on each end to create a handle. Put a dot of glue on each end of the handle, and place it on the bottom and center of your megaphone.
Now put your megaphones in a cake, and may the best team win!
Happy crafting!
