Grab your favorite pencil to jot down a quick note, then write verrrrrry slowwwwwly with an adorable sloth pencil topper on board! Whether you choose pastel shades or something more natural, sloths bring the cute factor. Plus, these slow-moving friends are actually quick to craft!
Thankfully, even though sloths don’t move quickly, these pencil toppers are unlikely to have the same effect on you. In fact, having a furry friend hanging out as you work might cause the opposite and you may just find some speedy inspiration!
Hurry and grab your supplies so you can get started!
what you need:
- Freezer Paper
- Pencil
- Felt in a Light and Dark Color
- Iron
- Scissors
- Embroidery Floss
- Needle
- Craft Glue
- Printable template
how-to:
Step 1
Print the sloth pencil topper template PDF and trace two sloth bodies and one sloth face on the non-shiny side of the freezer paper.
Step 2
Iron the traced sloth bodies onto the dark felt and the face on the light felt. Cut out the body pieces and peel off the paper. Leave the freezer paper on the face for the next step.
Step 3
Cut a piece of embroidery floss and split it into three strands. Thread your needle and knot the other end.
Embroider the sloth face through the felt and paper. Use back stitch for the eye outlines, satin stitch for the nose, and scallop stitch for the eyes and mouth.
Carefully peel and tear away the paper to reveal the embroidery and felt underneath.
If you want, you can also embroider some simple fur lines on one of the sloth bodies.
Step 4
Glue the face to the head area on the front body piece. With one of the body pieces flipped upside down, glue the hands and feet together.
Step 5
After the glue dries on the hands and feet, wrap the sloth around your pencil to see how tight it needs to fit.
Apply glue on one of the sloth bodies, but only up to the point where the pencil will go. Fold the sloth over so the two body pieces line up.
Hold the arms and legs for a minute or two so the glue starts to set up. You may even want to place a heavy book on it so it can dry for a little while.
Once the glue dries you can slide this sweet sloth onto your pencil so it can hang out with you while you write or draw!
These are fun to make for yourself, and you might even want a few so all your pencils are looking cute. They also make a great gift for your sloth fan friends!
If you don’t want to do all the embroidery or you don’t have felt, you can also make these out of paper. Just trace the pieces onto colored paper and draw the face on a separate piece. Then follow all the rest of the instructions as usual.
Happy crafting!
