Peanut Squirrel Ornaments

This post is sponsored by Plaid Enterprises.

Peanut Squirrel Ornaments

We’ve been having so much fun turning nuts and pinecones into Christmas ornaments, we thought we’d add one more to the list: painted peanut squirrels! Last year we turned mixed nuts into llamas, snowmen, and Christmas trees and these squirrels are ready to join the party! Squirrels love nuts and seeds, so it’s a little bit funny that these ornaments are made of one of their favorite snacks. I guess you really are what you eat!

Peanut Squirrel Ornaments

Giving these little guys a pastel makeover is easy as can be with a few trusty bottles of Folk Art Acrylic Paint. You can literally make a whole rainbow of painted squirrels to decorate your tree with this year! See the full step by step instructions below.

Peanut Squirrel Ornaments

what you need:

Peanut Squirrel Ornaments

how-to:

Peanut Squirrel Ornaments
Step 1
Pick out your peanuts and give them a coat of paint all over. Let dry.
Note: When selecting your peanuts, avoid the single or triple nut ones, sticking to the doubles. Picking smoother, standard looking peanuts make for the best-looking squirrels later!
Peanut Squirrel Ornaments
Step 2
Double over a matching pipe cleaner to make it a little puffier than the single strand. We used these fluffy pipe cleaners, but regular ones will work too – just layer a few more strands in to make it even puffier like a squirrel’s tail. Give the tail a slight bend as shown, and trim so that it is just slightly taller than your peanut.
Peanut Squirrel Ornaments
Step 3
Pick out which side of the peanut you’d like to be the front and then hot glue the tail to the bottom of the back.
Peanut Squirrel Ornaments
Step 4
Next hot glue four matching mini pom poms onto the peanut to be the squirrel’s legs.
Peanut Squirrel Ornaments
Step 5
Cut two tiny ears out of matching felt and hot glue to the top of the peanut.
Peanut Squirrel Ornaments
Step 6
Repeat so that you have a whole rainbow of squirrels!
Peanut Squirrel Ornaments
Step 7
Finally, turn them into ornaments by cutting a piece of string about 4″ long. Tie into a loop with an overhand knot and then hot glue into the gap between the back of the squirrel’s body and the pipe cleaner tail, holding in place to secure.
Peanut Squirrel Ornaments
Since these ornaments are made from peanuts, make sure to keep that in mind if you plan on giving these as DIY gifts this holiday season. If you aren’t sure if a friend or family member may have an allergy, play it safe and use the smaller, oblong pinecones (like these) instead of peanuts.

Indian Corn Necklaces

Indian Corn Necklaces
Indian corn is synonymous with Thanksgiving. Each kernel is a jewel. A few easy steps turns ears of corn into accessories!
We absolutely love Indian corn. The Thanksgiving staple has captured our attention for as long as we can remember. Every ear provides dozens of tiny gems saturated in glorious warm tones. Each slightly different but equally as stunning. This year our family is not only going to admire it as the cornerstone to every awesome cornucopia centerpiece there ever was, we’re going to wear it too!
Indian Corn Necklaces
The colorful variety of maize otherwise known as flint corn packs considerable more starch per kernel than sweet corn. This makes it less prone to spoil and therefore perfect for seasonal decor and jewelry.

what you need:

Indian Corn Necklaces
  • Indian corn
  • Embroidery floss
  • Craft needle
  • Pot
  • Scissors

how-to:

Step 1
Fill a large pot halfway with water and bring to boil. Place 1-4 ears of Indian corn into water and boil for 30 minutes. Turn stove off and let corn cool to the touch.
Step 2
Remove kernels from cob and place in small bowl. Thread needle with embroidery floss.
Step 3
Pierce each kernel with needle and thread onto embroidery floss. String as many kernels as you would like and to desired length. You can knot between each kernel for another fun look.
Indian Corn Necklaces
We had so much fun crafting these Indian corn necklaces that we might just have to make it a tradition and do it every year!
Indian Corn Necklaces
Traditions are one of the cornerstones of Thanksgiving, whether it’s wearing a special jersey for game day luck or breaking the wish bone, they tighten the bond shared between family. A special tradition our family shared growing up is sharing a list of Thanksgiving facts to better understand the history as well as learn fun trivia about the holiday. It’s always a fun and exciting activity that we all look forward to!
Printable Thanksgiving Fun
Whether you’re looking for a new way to engage your family over the Thanksgiving turkey or add a new activity for the kids table, facts and jokes act as a fun way to spark conversation. Download the printable here – it’s a sure fire way to bring some laughter to the dinner table!
From our dining room table to yours, happy Thanksgiving!
