Educating our Children to be Anti-Racist

Hi Mummies,

Talking about such a heavy topic such as racism can be very intimidating because I have never experienced it first hand and I don’t want to say the wrong thing that could cause more harm than good. I keep thinking, what can I possibly say as a white priviledged woman on a subject I could never understand? I’ve come to realise that feeling this way is part of the problem, we need to feel comfortable about talking about and addressing the uncomfortable, I as a mummy need to do better.

I was always aware of the corrupt police forces in America and across the world when it comes to racism but in this past week since the tragic death of George Floyd, I have learnt so much.

What I thought was right before, actually isn’t. I want to always educate myself and keep up with this in real time so I can learn how to help and make a difference, however big or small.

As mummies we have the responsibility to bring our children up to be anti-racist. They are the next generation, our hope for change in this world. Here are a few tips I found on the internet on how to educate our children to be anti-racist.

  • Read books that feature families of ALL ethnic backgrounds.
  • Talk about white privilege and social inequities
  • Actively participate in challenging your own racial biases
  • NEVER make excuses for relatives, hold them accountable
  • For white families, teach your child how to listen to Black indigenous people of colour stories.
  • Help children recognize that they do not have to have all of the answers.
  • Raise them Kind. It starts in the home.

For a very long time I never wanted to see people of colour as different, I wanted to see one race. But I was wrong. It does more harm than good thinking this way because if you are not suppose to see the race then you can’t call out racism and you end up with a vicious cycle of ignorance.

As mummy’s we have to always educate ourselves to be better, for we set the example to our children.
