Sweet Treats for Mother’s Day

DIY Mother's Day Card

Mother’s Day is around the corner and I always try to make something special for the occasion. Something I would secretly like to receive. (Listen up, kids!)

I treasure every Mother’s Day present I’ve gotten over the years. Pasta necklaces, portraits of me, drawings and cards. Handmade cards are particularly special because you have to think about what the person reminds you of: a feeling, a story, a thought.

My mom is the sweetest and most colorful person I know. Her house is a museum of her kids’ crafts, and I inherited an appreciation for art of all kinds.

Using all of this as inspiration, I decided to make a large-scale Mother’s Day card and chose “sweet treats” as the theme. Donuts, cakes, candy. Anything that’s delicious and impossible to share.

Step 1
For the envelope: Lay out the large, colorful paper. Using the picture below as a guide, draw a square at the center of your sheet. On the top of each side, draw a thin rectangle (1/2” high). Draw a triangle on top of each rectangle. Cut, fold and glue.

Step 2
For the donut: Draw a circle on your piece of cardboard, then draw another one inside of the first one. Cut and paint your shape like your favorite donut. Follow the same process for the slice of birthday cake. The icing and sprinkle options are endless!

Write a note to your Mom on the back of your homemade treat, place it in the envelope, and voila!
