“It’s a cat – no a rabbit! Oh and look there’s a ship over there!”
Did you ever look for fun shapes in the clouds as a kid? I used to do it all the time, especially when the weather was warm and the skies were blue in the summer. I have to admit though, I always wondered what the clouds tasted like, too. (Is it just me or do they look like giant, delicious pieces of fluffy goodness?) Either way, these fun memories from my childhood have been bouncing around in my head and that’s how the idea for this DIY cloud cake came to be!
This cloud cake is perfect for a summer barbecue, potluck, or outdoor picnic. Kids will love looking for shapes in the frosting clouds and they might even see things you didn’t even think of when you were piping them! If you ask me, that just makes it all the more fun. Get your piping tools ready because it’s time to take a bite out of summer – and finally those clouds, too!
what you need:
- Rectangular cake (this one is 7.5″ x 11.5″) with blue frosting
- White frosting
- #2 piping tip and pastry bag
- White cylinder sprinkles (optional- I only used these as rabbit whiskers but they are not necessary)
how-to:
Step 1
Bake your favorite cake recipe in a rectangular pan and cover it with blue frosting. Then, brainstorm ideas of cloud shapes that you would like to pipe onto your cake. Choose shapes that can easily be identified as a silhouette as too many small details will be difficult to portray in clouds. To give some examples, I piped a rabbit, a heart, a music note, a fish, the word “Hi”, cherries, and a boat. Feel free to use mine as examples if you’d like!
Step 2
Use your piping tip, pastry bag, and white frosting to start piping some clouds. When piping your shapes, start by creating an outline that is a little “wiggly” looking. This makes it look more like a cloud rather than a perfect shape. After you outline your shape, fill it in with frosting and swirl it around to give it a fluffy cloud-like look. I piped and filled in one shape at a time, but if you prefer, you can create your outlines across your cake first and then fill them all in after. Remember to pipe actual cloud shapes onto the cake, too!
Step 3
If you piped an animal that has whiskers, try adding cylinder sprinkles to form the whiskers. It’s a fun extra touch but you can totally pipe them too, if you don’t have any sprinkles handy.
Now you’re all set to enjoy some cake! Get your head IN the clouds and let your imagination run wild! Happy summer everyone!
